AUBURN CAREER CENTER TEACHER NAMED STATE BOARD DISTRICT 7 TEACHER OF THE YEAR

CONCORD TWP., OH - Auburn Career Center’s Terry Colescott named the Ohio Department of Education’s
State Board District 7 Teacher of the Year.

Colescott is the Advanced Manufacturing teacher at Auburn Career Center and has over 25 years of
experience as a machinist.

“Terry Colescott epitomizes the quality of teachers that we have at Auburn Career Center and in career and
technical education across Ohio,” said Dr. Brian Bontempo, Auburn Career Center’s superintendent. “Teachers
like Terry make a huge impact; not only for students and families, but for businesses and industries by
preparing students to be career ready.”

Colescott has built an impressive workforce of young professionals by placing 90% of his class into well paying
positions by graduation.

School administrators, fellow educators, parents, students and community members from across Ohio nominate
teachers for the district awards.

His nomination read, “Terry Colescott has a passion for helping each student find not only their specific talents
but also manifest talents they never knew that they had. He believes that while all students won’t learn the
same thing, they can all learn something. He uses questions to challenge students to make discoveries. Rather
than viewing himself as an instructor and deliverer of knowledge, he views himself as a guide who asks
questions that will lead students along their educational journey.”

“It is both an honor and a privilege to receive this recognition. I’m humbled to represent all of the great
educators in District 7,” said Colescott during his acceptance. “I would be remiss if I didn’t recognize and thank
my colleagues at Auburn as well as our administration and our Board of Education because they’ve all
supported me and taught me so many things about being a good teacher and how to best serve our students. I
could not do this without them. Lastly, I want to thank my parents, my students and their families. They
motivate me to do the best job I can every day.”

The Ohio Teacher of the Year program identifies exceptional teachers statewide celebrating their effective
work in and outside the classroom. The mission of the program is to provide opportunities for professional
learning to exemplary teachers as leaders and advocates for public education. The candidates have the
respect and admiration of their colleagues. They are experts in their fields who guide students to achieve
excellence; collaborate with colleagues, students, and families to create a school culture of respect and
success; deliberately connect the classroom and key stakeholders to foster a strong community; and
demonstrate leadership and innovation in and outside the classroom that embodies lifelong learning.
